In a recent Computer World Journal article the new reality of generational conflict within the IT workplace took center stage. The article “Clash of the Generations” discusses the issue of baby boomers being economically motivated to re-enter the workforce due to their dwindling retirement while at the same time many millenials are coming out of college and looking to explore new opportunities. While many imagined baby boomers and millenials simply easing by each other as baby boomers gradually retired and millenials moved in, the recent faltering economy has changed that idea. This is leaving businesses to decide how to weigh the relative value of traditional and new age skills. Both generations have a lot to offer but their work ethic and knowledge vary drastically. For example the article discusses the difference between communications within the two generations. Millenials prefer texting, blogging, twitter, and wiki while baby boomers prefer conference calls and e-mails. While both generations have a lot to offer it is now up to businesses to decide which generation is best for them.
